Now in his 70s, Ove returned to Norwich in October 2006 to be made a Freeman of the City. For 10 glorious years he thrilled crowds at the Firs stadium until its closure in 1964. A quiet and modest young man off the track, on it he was one of the most feared and ruthless riders. ‘He had such a distinctive riding style and a habit of coming from the back to win a race,’ said Mike Betts, joint MD of Woodforde’s. After retiring Ove went on to build a large European haulage company before setling in the south of France.
We produced a special beer in his honour - Ove Fundin’s Champion Brew - which we are delighted to say won 3rd place in the Best Bitter category at the Norwich Beer Festival.
